Solar energy has great potential in Pakistan due to high temperatures and abundant sunlight. Additionally, it provides a clean and eco-friendly alternative source of energy for economic growth. Furthermore, solar power generation doesn’t emit greenhouse gases or harm the environment. Moreover, it benefits both residential areas and corporations, reducing electricity costs and easing the energy shortfall in the country.
However, installation costs can be high, and damage to roofs can occur. Despite these challenges, the cost-savings and clean energy benefits are significant. Domestic residents can install photovoltaic panels on their rooftops to access solar energy. In the industrial sector, solar panels can be used to generate heat for the production and processing of various products.
With electricity shortfall being a problem in Pakistan, the use of solar panels can improve energy access for industries and lead to increased production and employment opportunities. This can ultimately strengthen the economy by increasing per capita income and boosting export potential, thereby improving the trade balance.
To combat Pakistan’s energy crisis, the current government has launched a comprehensive National Solar Policy, promoting environmentally friendly and low-cost solar energy. In order to fully utilize solar power in the country, consistent and determined efforts are necessary. Net metering should be widely available to consumers for efficient electricity generation, ultimately leading to energy self-sufficiency. This is crucial in reducing power theft, circular debt, and distribution losses.
While solar panels reduce electricity bills, their high production cost and time-consuming installation pose challenges. Additionally, imported solar equipment lacks after-sales services, as Chinese solar companies lack a local presence. Therefore, technical assistance from government authorities is needed to overcome implementation issues.
Despite these challenges, Pakistan has massive potential for solar energy implementation, with 10 hours of daily solar radiation intensity in southern Punjab, Sindh, and Baluchistan generating 45-83 MW per month. The government has commissioned six solar power projects with 430 MW cumulative capacity in Kashmir, Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan. Notably, the Quaid-e-Azam solar park in Cholistan, Bahawalpur, is one of the largest solar plants in the country, with a capacity of 100 MW in a covered area of 500 acres.
