Paul O’Grady, a beloved comedian, campaigner, and animal lover, has left an indelible mark on British entertainment. Born in Birkenhead, near Liverpool, in 1955, O’Grady first gained fame as Lily Savage, a tart-tongued Liverpudlian drag queen who became a fixture of London’s Royal Vauxhall Tavern. He used his platform to speak out about LGBT rights during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, a time when the Conservative government of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was passing anti-gay laws.
Later, O’Grady moved into television, hosting talk shows and gameshows, including “The Paul O’Grady Show,” “Blind Date,” and “Blankety Blank,” as well as a long-running program on BBC radio. He also presented “For the Love of Dogs,” which profiled the work of the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, an animal rescue charity. O’Grady’s commitment to animal welfare led him to work closely with Britain’s queen consort, Camilla, who was a guest on the show last year.
Sadly, O’Grady passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Tuesday evening, according to his partner Andre Portasio. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals, and all those who enjoyed his humor, wit, and compassion. O’Grady’s legacy lives on, as he wasn’t just a brilliant comedian and broadcast personality but a much-admired campaigner for LGBT+ equality and animal rights.
